Greetings From The Keene Kiwanians !
The Keene Kiwanis is part of an international service organization. Our mission is to serve children in our local communities. Throughout the year we hold projects and events which serve as fund raisers. All of the money we raise is invested back in our community in the form of scholarships, grants, and aid to needy families. We support (5) local youth groups at Keene High School and Monadnock Regional High School, St. Joseph’s Regional School, the Keene Family Y and Keene State College.
Our activities include our spring “Kool Wheels” bike rodeo where we distribute hundreds of bike helmets to local children at no charge. In August, our Antique Car show takes the stage. In October, we park cars and sell the tastiest fried dough anywhere at Keene’s well-known Pumpkin Festival. This November, we are taking over another great event, the tree lighting on Central Square. Hundreds of area children will hear holiday music, meet Santa and Mrs. Claus, all while sampling wonderful hot cocoa and cookies. There’s plenty to do and we welcome your help.
We’re eager for new members to continue our service. So please, open your hearts and join Kiwanis today. Anyone interested in serving others will feel very welcome here. If you would like to see why we do what we do, join us on any of our Wednesday breakfast meetings at the Pub Restaurant at 7:30 a.m or contact us. Your first breakfast is on the club. Our Annual May Kool Wheels Day -A Great Success!
On May 4, 2013, the Keene Kiwanis hosted its annual Kool Wheels Event at the Keene Parks and Recreation Department from 10:00 to Noon. The focus of Kool Wheels is bicycle safety. Some of our activities were:
• Free bicycle helmets were given to children.
• Bicycle safety inspection by Monadnock Cycling Club.
• Safety course tested knowledge of laws and safe practices.
• Ribby, the Keene Swamp Bats mascot, greeted all.
• Face painting, arts & crafts and many other activities!
• Cheshire Medical Center orthopedic staff on hand with first aid for teddy bears.
• Car seat safety checks by CMC/DHK Children’s Learning Center.
• KSC Dietetic Interns hosted the preparation and serving of healthy snacks and provide dietary information about healthy eating.
• The Keene Police Department provided parents with Safety Kits.
• Keene Fire Department presented fire safety tips and information.
• Two new bicycles were donated by Walmart and raffled off at the end of event!

A Family Dedicated to Kiwanis
In January 1946, I was born the middle son of William J. and Dorothy B. Deverill. At that time, my uncle, C. Stanley Bouton, was President of the Darien, CT, Kiwanis Club. After approximately ten years, he (my uncle) moved on to other organizations and clubs. However, he had brought my father, William J. Deverill, to Kiwanis wherein he was a Kiwanian for 38 years up to his passing in 1982.
In 1982, a Darien Kiwanian stopped at me office every Tuesday and took me to the Kiwanis meetings. I spoke to me wife and saying I don’t know how to lose this guy so I will become a Kiwanis member and then not go to the meetings. Contrary to that actuation, I ended up having perfect attendance for the next twelve years and became President of the Darien Kiwanis (1996-97) when I was 50 years old.
In 1999, I sold my business and moved to Keene, New Hampshire. The very first thing I did was to go out and find the blue Kiwanis sign to see when and where they met. I came to my first meeting and met Don Flibotte who was the President at that time. I asked for my membership to be transferred to the Keene Kiwanis. Then to continue tradition, I asked my daughter, Reed Deverill, now Reed Graves, to join. She joined in October of 2005. This adds up to 80 plus years of Kiwanians in my family and three generations. Hopefully, Reed and Digger’s new baby will continue this tradition.

The Eliminate Project
Changing the world by saving and protecting mothers and newborns
Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces in a worldwide service project aimed at eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus by the year 2015. This insidious disease takes the life of one baby every nine minutes. The infant’s short lifetime is marked by pain that includes an extreme sensitivity to light, sound, and even physical contact that prevents even a mother’s loving touch.
Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT):
- Kills nearly 60,000 newborn children and a significant number of mothers every year
- Kills one baby every nine minutes
- Targets the poorest, most under served women and children on Earth
 A donation of less than $2 can protect a mother and her future babies from contracting the deadly tetanus bacteria. A woman who receives 3 doses of the tetanus vaccine is protected for the majority of her childbearing years and passes on her immunity to her newborn. The goal is to save and protect more than 61 million mothers and their infants by raising $110 million over the next 3 years.
Kiwanis and UNICEF need your help and support. In May, the Kiwanis Club of Keene will be reaching out to the community to raise funds for The Eliminate Project. Wristbands will be sold and donations will be solicited as we join this worthwhile effort to save millions of precious lives. Remember: $2 Saves A Baby's Life. Look for displays around the city like the one on the right with Kiwanians Janet and Art.

Upcoming 2013 Community Service
We are entering a very active time for our membership. Our schedule involves a variety of activities to help make Keene a better place. Included are:
- Adopt-A-Highway Rt 9 where we clean two miles of Rt. 9 around the Chesterfield Hill four times
 yearly.
- Kiwanis Garden Planting We plant flowers and maintain the roadway island at the intersection of Winchester and Island streets in Keene.
- KPTI visit to Boston Each spring, we travel to Boston to learn about the goals of the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute. Our club makes an annual donation to KPTI to help sustain its great work.
- KHS & MRHS Project Graduations [June 21] Members assist KHS and MRHS with their graduation night celebrations.
The 2013 Kiwanis Antique Car Show...Coming This August 10th
On Saturday, August 10th, the Kiwanis Club of Keene will host its second antique car show at the Gordon Bissell American Legion in Keene. Over 100 classic & antique cars will be on display with a variety of entertainment for all ages including door prizes and hot food.

Keene Kiwanis Sponsored Youth Service Clubs
The Keene Kiwanians focuses on teaching young children about the responsibilities of good citizenship, community service and building future leaders. Accordingly, we sponsor five local youth groups.
